Int. Pres. Claude M. De Vorss was in Madrid to discuss the role of Lionism in Spanish life with top level members of the government and to officiate at club charter presentation ceremonies. He was accompanied by Third Int. Vice-Pres. Jorge Bird. Pres. De Vorss and Vice-Pres. Bird met with Premier Francisco Franco and members of his cabinet. They were joined by U.S. Ambassador to Spain Robert Woodward. During the discussions, Int. Pres. De Vorss pre¬sented the Generalissimo with Lionism's Head of State Medal. Spain
is the second major country to become a member nation of Lions International
in the past few years. First, in 1963, was Turkey with the establishment
of the Istanbul club. Although Spain has a smaller land area (slightly
larger than that of California) than Turkey, it has a bigger population. España:

Claude M- De Vorss estuvo en Madrid para discutir la función del Leonismo en la vida de España, con altos miembros del Gobierno y para oficializar la presentación de la ceremonia de la entrega de la Carta Constitutiva. Estuvo acompañado por el tercer Vice-Pres. Inter. Jorge Bird. Pres. De Vorss y Vice-Pres. Bird, se reunieron con el “Premier” Francisco Franco y miembros de su gabinete. Estuvieron acompañados por el embajador de EE UU en España Robert Woodward. Durante las discusiones, el Pres. Inter. De Vorss presentó al Generalísimo la medalla Leonístico Jefe de Estado. España es el segundo país grande en hacerse país miembro de Lions Internacional en los últimos años. Primera en 1963, fue Turquía con el establecimiento del Club de Estambul. Aunque España tiene un territorio más pequeño (Un poco más grande que california) que Turquía, tiene una población mayor. El presidente del new Club es Juan Abello Pascual, un diputado. In one week's time, Lions International resurrected that old connection in a new form. With the chartering of Lions clubs in Madrid and Santo Domingo, the two countries became, respectively, the 127th and 128th to enter the humanitarian order of Lionism. Int. Pres. Claude M. De Vorss, accompanied by Third Vice-Pres. Jorge Bird, flew first to Spain and then to the Dominican Republic to participate in charter presentation ceremonies. In both countries, they met with leaders of the governments. The President presented Lionism's Head of State Medal to Spain's Francisco Franco. Generalissimo Franco said: "I hope that Spain will become one of the countries strong in Lionism." In addition to national history, both clubs had other things in common. Their meetings were well attended by delegations of sponsoring Lions; 51 Portuguese Lions for Madrid, and Puerto Rican Lions for Santo Domingo. Both clubs, too, have memberships which represent a cross section of their cities' business, professional and industrial leadership. Though both charterings were signal events, the establishment of the Madrid club had an impressive additional distinction. It represented the first time a service organization has chartered a club in Spain. DOS PAÍSES DEL LEONISMO
En el periodo de una semana, Lions Internacional ha resucitado esta vieja conexión de una forma nueva. Con la creación de los Clubes en Madrid y Santo Domingo, los dos países se convirtieron respectivamente los 127º y 128º en entrar el orden humanitaria del Lionismo. Pres. Inter. Claude M. De Vorss, acompañado por el Tercer Vice-Pres. Jorge Bird, volaron primero a España y luego a la República Dominicana para participar en las ceremonias de presentación. En ambos países, ellos se reunieron con los líderes del gobierno. El presidente presentó la medalla Leonístico “Jefe de Estado” al español Francisco Franco. El Generalísimo Franco dijo “Yo espero que España será unos de estos países fuertes en el Leonismo”. En adición a la historia nacional, ambos clubes tiene algo en común. Sus reuniones estuvieron bien atendidos por delegaciones de los Clubes padrinos; 51 Leones portugueses para Madrid y Leones de Puerto Rico para Santo Domingo. Ambos clubes, también, tienen miembros que representa una selección de sus ciudades, líderes del mundo de negocio, profesional e Industrial. Ambas cartas constitutivas, fueron eventos señalados, el establecimiento del Club de Madrid ha tenido una distinción adicional impresionante. Ha sido la primera vez que una organización de servicio, he presentado una carta constitutiva en España. |

THE
FIRST OUTSIDER to set eyes on the island of Hispaniola was a sailor
in the Spanish fleet of Columbus. For 400 years thereafter, Spain maintained
dominion over the portion of the island which was named Santo Domingo,
after the patron saint of Columbus' father. Today the land is known
as the Dominican Republic, although its capital city retains the country's
old name.

PRIMER FORASTERO que a puesto sus ojos sobre la isla de “Hispaniola”,
fue un marinero en la armada de Colón. Durante 400 años,
España ha mantenido su dominio sobre la porción de esta
isla que fue llamada Santo Domingo, después del santo patrón
del padre de Colón. Hoy esta tierra es conocida por la República
Dominicana, aunque la capital mantiene su viejo nombre.
